Dog Car Travel Tips

You love your dog and he/she is part of your family - so of course you want it to go out on family 'dog friendly' days out.  Therefore it's very important that you have control over your dog while travelling in your car.

This is dog obedience at it's tightest because you are all in such a small confined space and it can be very dangerous for the driver if the dog is too noisy or out of control.  The first thing that springs to mind is if your dog barks constantly at anything it sees out of the car window.  This can get very annoying for other car travellers and could be serious and dangerously off-putting for the driver.

There could be two reasons why a dog barks constantly whilst travelling in a car:

#a  The dog could be very possessive and tries to take control of this 'new' situation in trying to protect the car whilst it is moving.

#b  The dog has a natural instinct to 'herd' and 'round up' the other passing cars on the road.

Whatever the reason why your dog is barking, you will need to try and make it stop.  Here's three tips to help combat constant barking:

#1  Don't shout and yell at your dog to be quiet.  Whilst this will probably be your first reaction, try not to do it.  The reason being is that your shouting will 'heat up' the atmosphere and get the dog more excited.  The more excited the dog gets, the more it will bark.

Try and stay as calm and relaxed as you possibly can.  You need to try and create a relaxed atmosphere for the dog to eventually pick up on.  Research has shown that this actually works very well.

2#  Now what I am about to say is not cruel, it's a known and respected dog training technique.  It's the water squirt gun - if your dog is literally getting out of control with it's barking, squirt it a couple of times between the eyes with water.

What this does is that it will give the dog a very negative feeling when being sprayed.  So the dog should eventually associate this negative feeling when it is barking.  This should completely stop the dog from barking, even the biggest of dogs.

#3  This last tip is mainly for the small dogs and that is to put the dog in a cage within your vehicle.  Whilst your dog will be sitting comfortably within the cage it will also give the dog a sense of security as limitations have been set in allowing your dog to see, hear and smell from the outside.

If you feel that your dog will not lie or sit still, then it is strongly advisable to either get a harness for your dog or just put a lead on it which will give it the encouragement to sit or lie still.

Lastly, it is also advisable to get a strong, washable and durable dog seat cover to protect your car seat.  The best type is to have a 'hammock' style cover which will protect the seats and the footwells at the same time.
